Volunteer: Laramie Salamander Migration Initiative

Help Laramie’s Salamanders Migrate Safely!

Every spring, Western Tiger Salamanders, Wyoming’s state amphibian, emerge from their underground winter burrows and make a daring nighttime journey to LaBonte Pond to breed. Their migration can happen any day now! It usually occurs on rainy nights when temperatures are just right, but busy roads can make their journey dangerous.

That’s where YOU come in! Volunteers are needed to help salamanders safely cross 9th & Canby and reach their breeding grounds.

How does it work? Volunteers patrol migration hotspots on rainy nights and carefully move salamanders off the road. In 2024, we collected data from 89 live migrating tiger salamanders and reported 12 salamanders were dead on the road from vehicle strikes.

IMPORTANT: EVERYONE MUST REGISTER TO VOLUNTEER! New University of Wyoming guidelines require ALL volunteers (including children 8+) to register individually—even if you helped in a previous year.

Mandatory Volunteer Training: Saturday, April 4 | 10–11 AM at the UW Berry Center To volunteer, register here: bit.ly/migrationnights

If you're not in Laramie but would like to help, report your western tiger salamander sightings from anywhere in WY here: bit.ly/SalSighting

Volunteer: Vulture Watch Wyoming

Vulture Watch Wyoming is for everyone! We encourage you to report any and all Turkey Vulture sightings this spring, summer, and fall—no matter where you are in Wyoming! One of the largest roosts is right on campus at Old Main! Your observations are key to confirming where these birds are nesting and roosting in our state. Turkey vultures are an important part of our environment. They help us by cleaning up the habitats where they live. Vulture Watch Wyoming needs community members (of any skill level) to help report where they are in Wyoming and what they are doing.

Join us for the Vulture Watch Wyoming training on March 17 in Cheyenne or on March 24 at the UW Berry Center to learn how to identify and record vultures. Learn more at our website. To attend the training virtually, registration is required to access the Zoom link at our website.
